Go Rally In Tallahassee-Do Nothing At Home: Do Our Leaders Run Away From Local Issues?

NAN Tallahassee"Al Sharpton and the National Action Network led a march Monday from the Tallahassee Leon Country Civic Center to the State Capitol to address 'stand your ground' laws. The parents of Trayvon Martin, their attorneys Benjamin Crump and Daryl Parks, the parents of Jordan Davis, as well as the family of Emmett Till joined in the effort.
The march ended with a rally at the Florida State Capitol building where Sharpton was the keynote speaker.

Sharpton told the crowd that polling Florida legislators in their districts would be the first step to repealing the laws nationally. More From NewsOne.com

It seems like there are lots of good reasons to march on Tallahassee, or Jacksonville, or Sanford.

We have rally after rally and march after march so much that they are almost meaningless.

After the George Zimmerman trail, there were so many town hall meeting discussing the 'unfair' verdict, I just knew that George Zimmerman would be arrested and given a life sentence.

But instead here we are, two years later and Zimmerman is free to sell his autograph at a gun show right here in Orlando.

So, what is the purpose of the rally? Is it to 'fire up' citizens around a common goal? Then what is next? Yesterday, the Rev. Al Sharpton said that the next step was polling Florida legislators in their districts. That sounds like a 'make work' project that will produce information that we already have. Yeah Rev. Al, let's look busy.

Maybe the next step should be for local National Action Network chapters to do something specific. The NAN organization and the NAACP and the Urban League seems to be hot on the idea of signing up new voters. These organization seems very weak with follow through when it comes to making sure the voting process is fair. So they sign up new voters whose vote means nothing because there was no follow through to the end.

In Orlando right now there is a very serious issue concerning possible election rules violations and candidate tampering by city officials. This is an issue just waiting for the NAACP or NAN or SCLC or some social organization to jump on. There are two NAN chapters in Orange County but neither shows concern about this situation. And what is the Orange County NAACP doing about this? The same thing they have been doing for the last eight years... NOTHING!

Maybe the NAN chapters joined the Orange County NAACP clown show and enjoyed their road trip to the big rally in Tallahassee. I guess now they will just schedule a few town hall meetings then sit back and look forward to the next big tent, road show.
