Sh*t Just Got Real in District 5 Orlando's City Commissioner's Race

Sh*t just got real in District 5 Orlando Florida City Commissioner's race with the following election results from April 8, 2014: Juan Lynum 39%, Regina Hill 37%, and Cynthia Harris 24% of the voters who voted in that race.

Can you say RUN OFF?

It was a modern day equivalent, or a 2014 version of the "Dewey Defeats Truman" moment from the Presidential election in 1948.

For those of you who don't know the history of the infamous newspaper headline from the Chicago

Tribune, here is the historical background; "Dewey Defeats Truman" was a famously incorrect banner headline on the front page of the Chicago Tribune on November 3, 1948, the day after incumbent United States President Harry S. Truman won an upset victory over Republican challenger and Governor of New York Thomas E. Dewey in the 1948 presidential election.

Although in the Orlando District 5 City Commissioner's race there was no "incorrect banner headline" on any front page of any paper here locally, the Orlando Sentinel, apparently, did not update its readership on the outcome of the race until, apparently, approximately 9:12 pm on Tuesday April 8, 2014. That, apparently, was about 1 and ½ hours after mynews13.com had the results up along with some details about the race.

Despite the snub by the Orlando Sentinel (their top election story was the Apopka Florida Mayoral race), for "urban Orlando Florida" readers, THIS WAS THE RACE to watch and keep up with the election results.

I saw the election results come in "real time" on a big screen at the post election gathering of Eric Eisnaugle, a fellow Orlando attorney and the Republican candidate for the Florida House District 44 race (who won.)

As I sat there watching the District 5 returns come in real time, I thought the following; the message is clear to me that voters in the District 5 Orlando Florida City Commissioner's race, apparently, sent a message to the "Lynum Brand" that appears to say that they no longer want the "Lynum brand" representing the interests in District 5, Orlando.

However, time will tell. Next up is the runoff election on May 6, 2014.

Again, sh*t just got real in District 5 Orlando Florida City Commissioner's race with the following election results from April 8, 2014: Juan Lynum 39%, Regina Hill 37%, and Cynthia Harris 24% of votes cast by voters.

What that also says is that 61% of those who voted, voted against the "Lynum Brand" when you combine the Hill and Harris percentages.

That cannot be good for Edward Juan Lynum.

I have, in the past, thought that Mr. Lynum, under the circumstances, was the best candidate for District 5. Indeed, I have criticized those who have made the silly allegation that Mr. Lynum is a so-called "momma's boy" (whatever that means).

And apparently, according to published news reports, all three candidates have accused each other of "residency issues" from time to time since the beginning of the campaign.

However, right now, the reality is, even for me, that this race is a "tossup" and the momentum is with Regina Hill.

And, as I have said in the past, "facts don't lie; only people do."

I must take the time to congratulate Regina Hill for her campaign efforts and what appears to be her effective grass root organizing efforts in the District along with an effective grass roots social media campaign. I too have been very critical of her well reported and often discussed and debated personal record. However, it appears that her background means absolutely nothing to those who voted for her and continue to support her (like my good friend Chad Cronon, Esq. who is a District 5 resident and one of the best criminal attorneys in Central Florida.) Chad has repeatedly told me and admonished me with the following (and I am paraphrasing Chad here) "Joe, at the end of the day; Ms. Regina Hill works hard in this community and cares about PEOPLE in this community and is from this community. And that is the ONLY thing that counts! And Joe, that is the only thing that SHOULD count, and you know it!"

I must also take the time to congratulate Ms. Cynthia Harris as well and like Ms. Hill, I have been highly critical of Ms. Harris and her background and qualifications. Although she only got 24% of those who voted in District 5, she got a HUGE 24% of the vote. Indeed, when you combine her 24% with Ms. Hill's 37%, one can argue that Juan Lynam got slaughtered last night. Now comes the "courting" between the "runoff" candidates for the supporters of Ms. Harris. THAT should be interesting especially since Commissioner Daisy Lynam (who is retiring from the District 5 commissioner's seat after 16 years) has been quoted in the press as calling both Ms. Hill and Ms. Harris "thugs" at one point during the campaign.

Again, that cannot be good for Edward Juan Lynum.

The District 5 election as also educated "old heads" like myself (I don't think I am old, but I guess I am) who have been political "junkies" here in Central Florida for some time, about the changing dynamics and demographics and "psychographics" (that means how folks think of themselves and things around them) of District 5 over the past 16 years. Gone are days of the black-American community relying only on the churches, and the so-called "black newspaper" press for endorsements, and information only coming from WCFB-FM "Star 94.5" (where I was the Billboard R&B Monitor award winning Assistant Program Director in 2000) and the "normative" outlets that disseminate information to the captive masses. Gone are the days of getting endorsements of "establishment" politicians and "personalities" that allegedly "matter." In today's world, if you do not understand "Twitter" or "Facebook" or "Instagram" or "Pinterest" and if you do not HAVE AN ACTIVE AND UPDATED WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGE, or any of the other social media outlets to get your message out, you are not going to be effective in getting your message out and you are not going to be successful with your "campaign."

And remember, May 6, 2014 is right around the corner.

And as we say all the time, "sh*t just got real dawg. "

And we all also say, "it's on now!!!"
