Commentaries On The Times-Detroit Is Bankrupt

DetroitWhen Governor Rick Snyder appointed an “emergency manager”, another name for an overseer, to the Detroit city government -- effectively terminating the officials that had been elected by the people -- it was another tactic in the Republican playbook in their never-ending battle against democracy. The city has ceded power and emergency manager has “unilateral control of municipal finances, union contracts, pension systems, and more” according to the Governor.

What’s happening in Detroit, Michigan is a model, a daunting precursor to what those on the right want for the country. A complete dismantling of democratic government. A treasonous act in my view but when people aren’t paying attention, it’s easy to pass laws that used to be crimes.

The irony is that business is booming in Detroit, in spite of the deteriorating conditions for the Black residents. It’s an attractive deal for businessmen with prime city property being sold to the highest bidder. With a Republican governor and legislature, the rights of the people have been all but dissolved. There’s no sense of duty from entitled city leaders engaging in blatant acts against the citizens. Efforts by concerned citizens to repeal the emergency manager position with a petition signed by thousands was rejected by the panel because the font was too small. I can only wonder what goes on behind the scenes that doesn’t make it into the news cycle.

Imagine waking up one day and finding that the leaders you cast a ballot for have been fired by the state.

This is a lively discussion between Playthell Benjamin, Dr. Herb Boyd, Dr. Basil Wilson, and guest, Eric Wattree, of The Wattree Chronicles. They take the conversation from the socioeconomic prospects around Detroit’s assisted demise to President Obama’s role in it all. The panel delves into the rules of governance, the national implications, and who is responsible for what.

Eric Wattree has been a staunch opponent against Cornel West’s attacks on the President and has made a point of calling the good professor out on his motivations and his shady bank dealings. Cornel West has been a great disappointment to me and his behavior since President Obama was elected makes me wonder. Just follow the paper trail.

The discussion ends on the morality of drone usage and weighs the costs of ground war versus the new technology of drone war.

The expert panel gives laymen the tools needed to navigate complex policies and to make sense of the hype and opinion prevalent today. It’s easy to get turned off by the world of spin that is the 24/7 news cycle but Thomas Jefferson warned us of the dangers of an uninformed, or worse, ill-informed electorate. “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, it expects what never was and never will be.”

Know the facts. Edify your mind for knowledge is power. That’s why those in power work so hard to fill the airways with junk to keep us from knowing anything.
