Hospital Bailout??

Remember the bank bailout at the height of the foreclosure crisis? Now, after refusing federal funds to expand Medicaid to the uninsured, Republican legislators are proposing to bail out hospitals for charity care using Low Income Pool (Disproportionate Share Program).

Instead of empowering people, they are proposing to bail out the institutions. As Congresswoman Castor wrote to the legislative leadership;

"As you are aware, the State of Florida recently requesteed $4.5 Billion fro the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Medicaid funds paid to providers from Florida's LIP [Low Income Pool (Disproportionate Share Program)]. This is ironic because the LIP was established to ensure continued government support for the provision of health care services to Medicaid, underinsured and uninsured populations. So on one hand, the State is blocking Medicaid funds, but on the other, the State has its hand out for billions of Medicaid funds."
