Politics is corrupt by nature. The way the system is in place, our political system is based on corrupt practices. You can't get elected without support. At least some of that support comes from donors. Once some folks or corporations donate, they expect favors in return. The politician now feels obliged to return that favor, not so much for payback, but for continued donations in the future.
Then we have the behind the scenes payoffs. Once firm trust is established, there are some that will simply accept large sums of cash in return for favors.

Then you have the recurring favors. Execs from company 'A'
want a new arena built in your district. They donate tons to your campaign. Every member of their executive board, all of their friends and family members, etc.- donate to you and you receive thousands of dollars.
You get the government approval for the project. You even get them a discount by providing some taxpayer funded cash to help build it. You have a cousin who needs a job. You make a phone call and the next week your cousin has a high paying job with a nice title and basically guaranteed employment regardless of job performance.
You might discuss taking a trip to Hawaii. A few weeks later very quietly, you receive a free expense paid trip from company 'A'. Next campaign season, company 'A' owes you, you got their multi-million dollar project through. That's a long term debt. They contribute again because of that debt to you and because they know you play the game and can be bought.
Either, they or their associates in other businesses may need to use you again. If you get voted out of office and they like you enough, you can expect to have a high paying job somewhere in their corporation, waiting for you.
The bottom line in politics is follow the money trail. If something smells foul, it probably is. You just have to follow the money trail - there is always one. You may have to look very hard to find it, but it is there.
