When The Real Black Candidate Ain't Good Enough

BlackCandidateBy Justin Spades
Juan Lynum, the coroneted son of withdrawn city commissioner Ms. Daisy barely edged by community based candidate Regina Hill, finishing just 37 votes ahead of her.

Master Lynum can't believe that a regular person like Regina Hill could do so well. Whereas, the Lynums have held reign in district 5 for the past 16 years. Presidents of the United States are limited to a maximum of eight years.

So when Regina Hill burst forward as the People's Choice, Young Lynum amused, "I am surprised a candidate with 21 arrests can garner so much support (This is Code for she is a Real Black Person or the N-Word). Regina's wild behavior is not becoming of a community leader. The community needs to understand the consequences of having someone like Regina in office."

For the record, she had one arrest with 21 counts, which happen well over 20 years ago. Since then, she

has become what we all dream of - a young black lady overcoming the odds and making something of her life.

Thus the issue posed by young Lynum – "is Black good enough?" The hard reality is that Regina Hills is body and soul of the people of district 5. She is black and she was raised in the harsh realities of the district. She knows by experience the realities of living black and the necessities of trying to get by.

Thus Daisy's son, Master Lynum, suggests that is not okay for a black person like Regina Hill to represent people like Regina Hill. Her wild behavior – this means she probably talks loud, speaks to her friends even when downtown around "the man", and actually lives in the district.

Oh by the way, we will know soon from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) as to whether charges will be filed against Juan Lynum for running and voting in a city district he does not live in. Lynum's wife and baby daughter live in his Tampa home. Thus he would have us to believe he sleeps with his family in Tampa, lives with his mother in Rock Lake as his legal residence and has a house for a homestead exemption in Sumter County. Not a twin, Juan is the Triplet Man. For it would take three people to live the reality he would have us to believe.

So a paradigm is emerging, according to the thinking of the non-black black person like Juan Lynum, is that the real black candidate isn't good enough. This thinking is a hangover from the time when citywide seats were the norm. A time before single-member districts and non-blacks represented everybody. In other words there were no black elected officials responsive to the electorate.

With the advent of single-member districts, black elected official emerged and demanded equality for the people. This was unacceptable to the "Man." So as time wore on, the downtown establishment coopted the "Black Commissioner." It is now to the point that the non-black black candidate can question the qualification of the real black candidate.
Oh you say Ms. Daisy is black. Well, I once read a poem of a grade-school girl who raised the point, "If you want to know - what your elected official really thinks of you, just go outside your front door and look around." "If it doesn't look as nice as White World, then you know."

Thus, we know by looking around how much the last Lynum cared for us. Oh, but young Lynum did say, "I have as much love for the poor people as my mother." Really! Lynum campaigned on a promise to continue his mother's "legacy of leadership." In the West Orlando district 5 that means poverty, unemployment and crime. The ancillary question is "Who is really driving Ms. Daisy?"

Thus, less than 40 percent –actually 39.2 percent - of the voters believed in him or that Failed Legacy. While over 60 percent of the voters voted for Change, with Regina Hill in the vanguard carrying the banner.

Voters in District 5 will go back to the polls again on May 6 and it looks like the people have spoken. Mr. Lynum can go back to his family in Tampa and pray to God that the Sumter County Property Appraiser Joey Hooten doesn't question his homestead exemption. Taxes due.
